Pennsauken, New Jersey - The Rockland Rowing under 19 youth team opened its spring season at the Steve Neczypor Memorial Regatta on the Cooper River and medaled in three races.
In the boy's varsity double sculls, sophomores Anthony Rostek Tappan Zee '20 and Ryan Almond Clarkstown North '20 won their heat to qualify for the final where they placed second with a time of 7:41.38. They were runner-up to a talented duo with ties to Vesper who raced unaffiliated (7:26.0), but had a decisive margin ahead of Haddon A (7:50.21), Manhasset (7:55.49) and Haddon B (8:05.42) and C (8:43.64). The boys were coached by Veli Etropolski.
In the girl's varsity lightweight double sculls Michaela Davidson Clarktown North '19 and eighth grade novice Caroline High took second-place clocking 9:26.95 behind their counterparts from Newport (8:53.10) but ahead of Whitemarsh (9:28.90) whom they fought off to hold onto silver.
Lightweight single sculler Gabriele Welp IHA '19 raced in an openweight field and finished victorious in 9:08.13 with a length of open water ahead of Whitemarsh's Dominique Marlin Andrews (9:12.08) and Veronika Zdrazil farther back (9:17.61). Welp started down off the line and trailed leader Marlin Andrews through the first 1000 meters before she began an impressive rally in the third 500 and took control of the race by the final 500. The girls were coached by Melissa Boyd.
