We’re more than just rowers; we’re a diverse group united by a shared passion for teamwork, personal growth, and the beauty of being on the water. Join us as we change lives and build a better future, one stroke at a time.
Our Mission & Vision
Mission
Rockland Rowing is dedicated to improving people’s lives through the sport of rowing. We offer a welcoming and supportive community that provides rowing opportunities to all—regardless of experience, abilities, or background. Our motto, “Pull with Purpose,” reflects our commitment to making a difference in everything we do and pursuing excellence at every level of the sport.
Vision
To provide rowing programs from learn-to-row for beginners to competitive training and racing for elite athletes.
To operate in an ecologically responsible manner, supporting the stewardship of our region’s water resources.
To act as a resource for local rowing programs, offering coach training and equipment rentals.
To establish a regional boathouse that elevates the visibility of rowing and provides a home for local clubs.
To partner with local organizations in fulfilling our mission.
To serve both youth and adults, including those who are physically or cognitively disabled.
Our History
Founded in 2002 as the River Rowing Association by Peter Fernberger and Bronwyn Woodhead along the banks of the Hudson River in Nyack, NY, RRA began with a single eight-person shell and a handful of high school rowers. In 2003, Peter Klose and Ivan Rudolph-Shabinsky joined as directors, converting RRA into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and expanding programming for youth and adults alike.
In 2013, the construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge prompted our move to Rockland Lake. In 2016, we became Rockland Rowing Association, reflecting our new home and our commitment to serving a broader community. Today, RRA has nearly 100 rowers and offers a wide range of programs for residents of Rockland, Bergen, and Westchester counties.
Rowing has been part of Rockland County since the late 1800s, with clubs like the Nyack Rowing Association and Piermont Rowing Club competing annually on Rockland Lake. We’re proud to build on this legacy by giving all members of our community the chance to experience rowing—whether as a path to college, a way to stay fit, or a source of lifelong friendships.
Rowing in Rockland
Rowing is deeply rooted in our region’s history. Today, Rockland Rowing offers opportunities for rowers of all ages and backgrounds to connect, compete, and grow. Many of our youth rowers have gone on to row for top colleges across the country, but collegiate rowing is just one of many paths our members take. Rowing at RRA is about personal growth, teamwork, and belonging—no matter your goals or background.
